Linnaeus’ Hammarby

Hammarby, the summer house of Linnaeus was built in 1762. Carl Linnaeus was a famous scientist and professor at the Uppsala University who was the first to frame principles for defining natural genera and species of organisms and to create a uniform system for naming them. In 1758 he bought the estate of Hammarby to spend his holidays in a quiet place and to secure the future livelihood of his family. Today it is a historic house and garden museum, and a Cultural Heritage Reserve with a recreated 18th century agricultural landscape with forest, fields, grazing paddocks, a cabbage field and a hop garden.

Härkeberga medieval church and rectory Landsberga farm [Fully booked]

This tour goes to the rural landscape west of Uppsala.

The first stop is in the village of Härkeberga. The small medieval parish church contains some of the most well preserved 15th century frescos in Sweden. The church’s vaults are covered with amazing pictures, with motifs from the Bible.

Nearby is the Kaplansgård, a museum of the residence and the farm of the assistant vicar from the 18th century, owned by the Nordic Museum. The 17 red timber buildings dates from the late 1600s to the early 1800s.

Landsberga is an estate owned by the Crown since centuries, today is run by the same family since the end of the 19th century. It is a farm with great historical values, which is combined with both rational cereal cultivation and sales of local products. In the old stables from the 19th century there is a café and a farm shop with the farm’s own eggs and other local products. The main building was erected in 1801 following an Italian model.
